Interlock rivets are the most common type of 'structural' or high strength rivet. This can be important as excess rivet length can lead to interference with moving parts. They are more expensive than standard rivets, but when a long length is used on thin material they compact, leaving less material hanging off the back as shown below. These rivets are specifically designed for situations where you don't know how long a rivet you might need (the grip). The result is that when installed sealed rivets are water tight. These rivets are similar to standard rivets except that the mandrel is completely enclosed. However, they are not water tight and are not as strong as some other rivet types. These rivets are the most common blind rivets and the least expensive. There are several common types of blind rivets each with its own advantages. As the mandrel is pulled back it deforms the rivet pushing the sides outward until the mandrel snaps (Step 4). A riveter is used to pull the mandrel back while holding the rivet in place (Step 3). They are composed of the rivet (green) and an integrated mandrel (orange)Д«lind rivets are installed in a tight hole that passes through the materials being riveted (Step 1 & 2). Aluminum rivets with steel mandrels are corrosion resistant and non-magnetic.Blind rivets are named so because they can be installed without access to the back side of the item being riveted. These should be used when fastening materials similar to carbon steel. The steel/steel style gives this rivet greater tensile and shear values compared to all aluminum varieties. Zinc plated rivets with steel mandrels have good rust resistance. They should be used only when fastening materials with similar properties. Aluminum rivets and mandrels and non-magnetic and corrosion resistant, along with having the lowest tensile and shear values. Stainless steel rivets and mandrels may be mildly magnetic and offer superior corrosion resistance. Countersunk blind options have an angled head and sit flush when installed. Wide domed heads provide a larger head for extra holding strength for over-sized holes or soft, thin materials. Domed heads are suitable for most applications and provide a low profile and clean, finished appearance.
